Medical Student Rotations- AHEC South Arkansas
AHEC South Arkansas offers primary care rotations for
the medical students of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences'
College of Medicine.
Rural Preceptorship
The Rural Preceptorship Program is designed for medical
students at UAMS who have completed their second year of basic sciences,
but not yet started their junior year clerkships.
Through a four to six-week preceptorship, students
can get a firsthand perspective of a primary care physician at work
in an Arkansas community of, generally, less than 15,000 in population.
Preceptorships can help ease the transition from
basic science into clinical medicine, and also provide the initial
experiences which have helped many medical students determine their
early career goals and preferences.
A stipend is provided for this type of rotation.
Family Medicine Junior Clerkship
The Department of Family
and Preventive Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences in conjunction with the Area Health Education Centers (AHECs)
in the state provide a four-week experience in Family Medicine.
This clerkship focuses on the outpatient management of medical problems
commonly encountered by family physicians. This clerkship is delivered
in a decentralized fashion, with training sites in El Dorado, Fayetteville,
Fort Smith, Jonesboro, Little Rock, Pine Bluff, and Texarkana. Most
importantly, the clerkship will expose junior medical students to
the skills, knowledge and attitudes that are basic to the discipline
of Family Medicine.
Senior Medical Student Electives & Selectives
Senior Selectives in Primary Care are 4-week rotations required
of all senior medical students, most of which take place in AHECs.
Acting Internships are also 4-week required rotations that focus
on teaching inpatient clinical skills and instilling confidence
in senior students in preparation for the first year of residency.
Senior Electives in all primary care specialties
and most medical sub-specialties can be taken in 4-week blocks in
the AHECs.
Housing is usually available for these rotations
