Facilities - AHEC South Arkansas

We occupied our current site in August 1998. Through the generosity of our local philanthropic community and our sponsoring hospital, we were able to transform three floors of Warner Brown Hospital into the show place of the Arkansas AHEC System. The Carroll Medical Library, administrative suite, Ellis Conference Center and classrooms are found on the first floor. The Family Medicine Clinic is located on the third floor; the VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic and the UAMS Faculty Clinic are located on the fourth floor.

The AHEC Clinic is truly "state-of-the-art". As a major part of our recent renovation effort, we were able to construct and equip a clinic that meets our needs now and will for so long into the future. Several conference facilities, including the Ellis Center, which utilizes the latest in communication technology, and an extensive library augment our clinical education. The clinic's location and design, as well as an efficient, congenial nursing and office staff, provide the ideal setting for you to experience a comprehensive private practice setting.

We have numerous, spacious exam rooms and several other rooms dedicated to procedures. We distinguish ourselves from many other family residency medicine programs with the breadth of procedures taught here. These include G.I. endoscopy with polypectomy, performed in a state-of-the-art endoscopy suite, video colposcopy and L.E.E.P, obstetrical ultrasound, and treadmill cardiac stress testing.

All inpatient care is provided at the Medical Center of South Arkansas (MCSA). Residents' patients are admitted to the AHEC Medicine service and their care is overseen by the core faculty, who serve as attending physicians. Regardless of their clinical rotation, residents follow any members of their own patient panel who might be admitted to the hospital. Almost all medical specialities are represented on the staff of MCSA, and care of these patients is undertaken on the respective rotations. MCSA has 360 beds including a rehabilitation and recuperative care unit. Each year our residents and family practice facility perform approximately 300 deliveries, over 100 cesarean sections, and many tubal ligations. AHEC is the largest single provider of such pregnancy-related care at the hospital.
